The problem right now is that as I have perhaps few long game opportunities each year, growing an experienced group in any single game is highly unlikely — but I do think 1830 will get better with more experience, so I'm definitely not giving up on it. It sounds like you prefer rail building. I've never been in an "all newbie" game of 1830. I suspect that it would play out as a rail building game, of which 1830 doesn't excel.
